Finally Connected!

The last time we posted we were in Chicago. We had a quick night there and then headed to the airport at about 4 am. Our flight to Atlanta went quick; however Atlanta was having a snow/mist at about 30 degrees. We had to be de-iced and left about an hour later than scheduled.

We landed in Guatemala, retrieved our 10 bags, sailed through customs and easily found our 4runner in the airport garage. We had planned to get groceries and then head right up the mountain; however, because we were later than expected and very tired we decided to go part way and save the rest of the trip for daylight. We stopped to get groceries in Guatemala City, rearranged our bags and then headed to a hotel in Chichicastenango. As soon as we arrived and checked-in, we crashed for almost 12 hours. Caleb said it was the most comfortable bed that he had ever slept in!

The next morning we drove to San Andres where the children's home is located. We had brought a few bags for some missionaries that serve there full time so we had to unload and adjust our bags as well as say a quick "hi" to the people at the home. We got back on the road to Canilla where we would be living. The travel for this day was all on mountain roads with the last couple hours on dirt. We arrived in Canilla in time for a delicious lunch with the Fickers.

We later took our stuff to the rental house to unload and get ready for bed. The next morning was clinic. Don was looking for his stethoscope and odoscope when we realized that somewhere along our journey we lost a suitcase. We know we had it when we left the airport so Don called all the places that we stopped along the way - the grocery store, the hotel and the Children's Home. We have not been able to locate it.

We are missing Don's medical equipment, 2 math books, some baking products, a couple fiction books that I got for my birthday, my cookbook, the girls' piano books, batteries and a few other small things. All of these things we can replace when we get home. We are also missing most of the gifts that we had for the kids at the Home. This is the hardest part. We have explained to them that we are missing a suitcase and we know that it will be fine, but it is disappointing for all of us. We are still praying that it will turn up and we trust that God is the God of the impossible because it does look rather impossible at this point.

We are settled into our temporary home now. It did take a little bit for us to get use to it but it has now become home and we are enjoying it. We are so thankful to the Fickers for all the work that they did to get it ready for us. We have included a few pictures here so you can get a glimpse of where we are staying.

Here is our pila that functions as a bathroom sink, kitchen sink and washing machine!

We set-up the other side of the kitchen as an office.

We haven't taken pictures of our two bedrooms so maybe we can post some later. I need to do about 2 more postings to get us all up-to-date, but that will have to wait for another day as well. We have celebrated Samuel's birthday here (twice) and spent a day at the children's home. Stay tuned! Thanks for your prayers!
